Ava has a PhD in Experimental Pathology and researched the immunology of paediatric liver disease. She then moved into academic administration, as the Director of Operations for Cancer Research UK’s research institute, which merged to create the Francis Crick Institute. She is a Chartered Member of CIPD and brings expertise in management and operations of academic organisations, together with the management of EU framework networks. Since retiring, she also volunteers for the schools programme at Kew Gardens.
