Preparing for the challenge

We are delighted to be working with Dr Frost Maths to help teachers use UKMT past papers and problems in the classroom.

You can utilise UKMT past papers, solutions and investigations as preparation materials for your students. They are a great resource containing high-quality problems from previous years designed to encourage mathematical thinking.

Instructions

Full written solutions – not just answers – are required, with complete proofs of any assertions you may make. Work in rough first, and then draft your final version carefully before writing up your best attempt.

One complete solutions will gain far more credit than partial attempts at all four problems

The use of rulers, set squares and compasses is allowed, but calculators and protractors are forbidden. You are strongly encouraged to use geometrical instruments to construct large, accurate diagrams for geometry problems.

You should write in blue or black ink, but may use pencil and other colours for diagrams.

You may hand in rough work where it contains calculations, examples or ideas not present in your final attempt; write ‘ROUGH’ at the top of each page of rough work.

To accommodate candidates in other time zones, please do not discuss any aspect of the paper on the internet until 8am GMT on Friday 17 November. Candidates in time zones more than 3 hours ahead of GMT must sit the paper on Thursday 16 November (as defined locally). Solutions video will be released at https://bmos.ukmt.org.uk
