British Maths Olympiad Round 1 Awards

Scoring

Scoring rules for the British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1 are as follows:

  • Each question carries 10 marks
  • Partial marks are awarded depending on the clarity of the participants Mathematical presentation. We advise working in rough first, then writing up your best attempt.
  • One complete solution will gain more credit than several unfinished attempts.

Awards and Thresholds

The top scoring students will receive a Certificate of Distinction or a Certificate of Merit depending on their score.

Each of the top 20 scorers receive a gold medal, the next 30 a silver medal and the next 50 a bronze medal. All medalists will also be awarded a book prize; the title varies from year to year. Each qualifying student receives a Certificate of Qualification or Participation depending on their entry route.

The 2023 award thresholds are:

Distinction: 30+

Merit: 13+

Gold 58+

Silver 49+

Bronze 44+

Follow-on Rounds​

British Mathematical Olympiad Round 2

Around 100 eligible top-scorers will be invited to sit the British Mathematical Olympiad Round 2.

British Mathematical Olympiad Round 2 2023 qualification threshold:

  • 43+ (yr 13, S6, NI14)
  • 42+ (yr 12, S5, NI13)
  • 39+ (yr 11, S4, NI12)
  • 37+ (yr 10, S3, N11 and below)
