Senior Team Maths Challenge
The STMC gives students the opportunity to tackle a variety of engaging maths activities while developing teamwork and communication skills.
The Challenge is for pupils in Year 12 and 13 (England and Wales)/ Year 13 and 14 (Northern Ireland)/ S5 and S6 (Scotland).
We close registration 3 weeks before the events, please register early to avoid disappointment!
What is the STMC?
The Senior Team Maths Challenge (STMC) returns in November 2026.
Teams of four students from schools and colleges across the UK take part in dozens of Regional Finals and high-scoring teams are invited to compete in the National Final.
Full list of venues and dates will be available on the website from September. We may advertise venues and dates prior to this either on our website or on socials.
Registration for STMC Regional Finals will open on Thursday 10th September, and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis through the competition portal.

Which year groups can take part in the STMC?
The Senior Team Maths Challenge is for pupils in Year 12 and 13 (England and Wales)/ Year 13 and 14 (Northern Ireland)/ S5 and S6 (Scotland). There should be no more than two pupils from the older year group in each team e.g. no more than two S6s in a team.
How does my school/ college take part?
Your school/college needs to be a registered UKMT centre. Your institution must be in the UK.
After verification, you will need to purchase an STMC ticket through your Competition Profile. One ticket is for one team, four students and one teacher.
What are the rounds at an STMC?
Starter questions – The starter questions do not contribute towards the final score of the team, they are provided to get the students ready for the activities ahead. A UKMT volunteer will remain with the students whilst teachers are bring briefed.
The three rounds – Teams compete against each other in three rounds – The Group, The Crossnumber and The Shuttle.
How much does it cost?
The registration fee per team is £40. As a charity, we do not make a profit from entry fees. We spend all the money we raise on advancing the education of young people in maths.
Can I enter two teams in the STMC?
No. One school/ college can enter one team. It is not permitted to bring two teams to a Regional Final.
How do I apply to host an STMC in November 2027?
Applications for becoming an STMC host open in April 2027 and successful schools will be contacted before the Summer holidays. The events run in November.
Host venues may be Universities, Colleges and Schools.
Essentials for hosting:
- A large sports hall or theatre space that can host around 20 teams (4 pupils per team and their teacher)
- A second space for the teacher briefing (around 40 minutes), this could be a classroom or a meeting room that can sit around 20-25 people.
- On-site parking for minibuses or having good public transport closeby.
Please note that due to a large volume of applications, not every venue will be chosen although we do aim to rotate venues in areas that have lots of host applicants.

How are host venues chosen?
Host venues are chosen based on suitability of the venue, number of host schools nearby, venues that we are able to get UKMT volunteers to and chosen to get a good spread of events nationally.
